What is “Human Dry Dock”?

So-called “Human Dry Dock (Ningen Dock )” is a general check-up and health promotion system, developed in Japan in the 1940s. Various evaluations and tests are used at once to determine prevention methods, care and treatment for any progressive, but preventable diseases including various kinds of cancer and lifestyle-related disease like obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. Early detection of potential risk factors is recommended to help aid in the prevention of many diseases.

Standard examinations of the “Human Dry Dock” care system include: a physical profile, visual and auditory acuity including fundoscope, blood pressure, ECG, respiratory function, blood check, urinalysis, radiographs of chest and upper gastro-intestinal part (or optionally, gastrointestinal endoscope), and abdominal ultrasound for liver, gall bladder, kidney, pancreas, spleen and other abdominal organs. Additional optional examinations include esophagogastroduodenal endoscopy, brain, spine, pelvis check using MRI, cardiovascular evaluation, lung cancer screening by CT scan, a women’s check with MRI, mammography and/or breast ultrasound, cervical cytology, and so on.

This procedure, in principle, is not covered by medical insurance, however, national, government, corporate, or mutual health insurance you are enrolled in might provide a financial support for you to receive the servece. Please inquire to whom it may concern.

MISAO Health Clinic is engaged in preventive medicine to protect travelers from infectious diseases, mountain sickness, and miscellaneous diseases in high-risk areas. The clinic provides various kinds of medication which you require, including chemoprophylactic regimens (e.g. malaria, mountain sickness), emergency (stand-by) presumptive self-treatment regimen (e.g. traveler's diarrhea), and self-injectable epinephrine (EpiPen®) for first aid management of food allergy and anaphylaxis due to bee sting, medicine and so on.

Vaccines for measles, rubella, mumps, and varicella are produced with attenuated viruses, and the other vaccines, available in Japan, are with inactivated antigens. In principles, approximately one-week interval is required after a shot of inactivated vaccine. After an immunization with attenuated vaccines, an interval of one month is required. However, in some cases the doctor can try to adjust the immunization schedule based on the traveler’s schedule before they leave, such as offering multiple shots at once to reduce your visits. Please be aware that some vaccines (e.g, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, and tetanus) require 2 to 3 shots to complete the series. In any case, it is recommended that travelers should start the series as soon as their trips are scheduled to allow sufficient time to administer all pertinent vaccines. Please call 058-274-0330 or e-mail yumisao@docmisao.jp discuss your vaccination needs, costs and make a reservation with one of our medical professionals.
